Good Health Starts With Great Digestion

Healthy digestion is the best place to begin your journey to better health. Digestion and absorption of essential nutrients determine how well all your systems function and hence determine the status of your overall wellbeing. Each system in your body is dependent on specific nutrients so any deficiencies can impair their optimal functioning and result in an array of conditions. For example, your nervous system is much dependent on B Vitamins, if these vitamins are at suboptimal levels, it can have implications on the nervous system and display in a variety of symptoms such as anxiety or low tolerance to stress. Deficiencies may be due to improper diet, insufficient intake of certain foods and/or poor absorption of nutrients.

Although our very survival depends on the nutrients provided by whole foods such as fruits and vegetables, many people overlook this importance, and develop poor eating habits. This often leads to a deficiency of essential vitamins and minerals, all of which are necessary for your body to perform its many duties on a daily basis.

A healthy diet allows the digestive tract to keep doing its job-acting as a protective barrier, allowing nutrients to be absorbed, while filtering out any harmful substances. On the other hand, an unhealthy diet consisting of high fat and sugar, low in nutrients and fiber as well as foods that you may be allrgic to, will impair your digestive function by overloading the tract with toxins and waste, overgrowth of unhealthy bacteria and yeast and compromise the integrity of the protective layer of the intestinal tract. Other lifestyle factors including the consumption of alcohol, antibiotics and other medications, as well as high stress levels have a negative impact on digestive function. A damaged digestive tract can no longer properly filter wastes, which results in harmful substances being absorbed into the body. A build up of waste and low fiber intake also contribute to a lack of bowel movements (constipation), which further hinders your body's ability to eliminate toxins. Poor digestive health affects the entire body and all its systems including hormonal, skin, and immune, surfacing through a range of symptoms.

Dr. Edalati educates her patients about good nutrition, checks for any nutritional deficiencies, tests for food allergies as needed and makes specific dietary recommendations for all her patients. For some people, nutritional deficiencies may not be due to poor diet but rather due to poor absorption of nutrients and until the malabsorption is addressed, even the best dietary intake will not sufficiently provide the essential nutrients to the body.

Dr. Edalati is experienced in treating a range of digestive conditions including celiac, Crohn's, IBS, ulcerative colitis, constipation, and ulcer along with an array of other conditions that are related to digestive function. Optimal digestion and absorption of nutrients is also a good preventative measure for avoiding illness in the future.
